I recently contributed a short essay to the Land Diagrams web project at the invitation of Amy Cutler . In partnership with another commentator we were set to think about the meaning of map of linguistic data for Cornwall suggested by Amy. The goal of Amy's project to produce ‘twinned study’ that can "offer two simultaneous gestures of thought in response to one geographical image". I hope the Land Diagrams project develops and I'll be keeping an eye on it.

Skype: Emoticon - Humoticon...

Image
Skype is apparently having a little bit of fun this week by launching an new app on Facebook. The recently acquired division of Microsoft has launched an app named HUMOTICON  which can be said as a humanised emoticon. The app puts a new and entertaining twist on the classic Internet emoticons that nearly everyone uses. It works by placing a picture of a human face inside a circle instead of some mere keyboard symbols. Users can either upload a previously taken picture to be placed inside the circle or use a webcam to take a live picture. It even allows people to take five quick pictures from a webcam to create a more animated look to your image. After the image is uploaded to the app, the new Humoticon can be shared on your Facebook wall or posted on humoticon gallery.

Kaspersky: “Apple is ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security.”

Image
Founder and CEO of the Kaspersky Labs, Eugene Kaspersky has some harsh words for Apple when it comes to security. At the Info Security 2012 conference, Kaspersky told that Apple is “ten years behind Microsoft in terms of security.” Kaspersky said that although Windows is still hacker's favorite target, Mac malware is growing at an unprecedented rate, something he said was “just a question of time and market share.” Although Apple has long prided itself on offering a more secure environment than Windows, the Mac has recently been hit by several high profile attacks, such as Flashback. If Apple is going to keep its users secure, Kaspersky says that they'll have to adopt a new update cycle, which some have faulted for allowing Flashback to take off in the first place. They will understand very soon that they have the same problems Microsoft had ten or 12 years ago. They will have to make changes in terms of the cycle of updates and so on and will be forced to invest more into thei...

Facebook gets into another Lawsuit - Use of Facebook Credits by Minors...

Image
A few days ago, a group of parents filed a lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the company doesn't do anything to impose restrictions towards children who want to buy in-game content for the so-called "free-to-play" apps published on Apple's App Store. Now another similar class action lawsuit has been filed, this time against Facebook. A site reports that the lawsuit was filed on Friday by Glynnis Bohannon of Arizona. She claims that her son, a minor, was able to purchase Facebook Credits, which are then used to acquire content for games such as Farmville. Facebook's terms of service claim that anyone under 18 can only purchase Facebook Credits with the help of parent or guardian's monetary help(may be through a credit card). However, Bohannon claims that her unnamed son was unaware that he was spending real money, via her mother's credit card, to purchase Facebook Credits. Facebook gets a 30 percent cut of all in-gaming transactions. Richard B...

Megaupload database could be wiped off...

Image
The struggling Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom may not be going to trial after all on charges of copyright infringement. That's according to the judge in the case, and the development comes after months of drama involving the now shuttered filing-sharing website.U.S. District Judge Liam O'Grady made the proclamation while hearing arguments about deleting Megaupload member files, which are enormously expensive to maintain. The judge said a discussion about wiping Megaupload's database could be premature and that a more relevant question was why Megaupload had not been formally served with criminal papers by the United States. Attorneys on both sides weighed in. Dotcom's attorney, Ira Rothken , maintained that whereas individuals can be served outside of U.S. jurisdiction, foreign companies cannot, reports Torrent Freak. "My understanding as to why they haven't done that is because they can't. We don't believe Megaupload can be served in a criminal matter ...

Samsung Galaxy S III leaked in Vietnam!!

Image
Samsung is highly likely to officially announce the Galaxy S III smartphone in early May at London. However, it looks like a Vietnamese website has managed to get a glance of the Prototype of the smartphone. The site   Tinhte not only got their hands on the smartphone prototype, but they also posted a video that gave the specs of the device, which has the internal model name GT-I9300. The specs confirm what has been reported before about the Galaxy S III, including that it will have a quad-core processor, Android 4.0 out of the box, a four inch screen and more. Its still a mystery how the site caught hold of the prototype. Unluckily Tinhte was ordered to take down the video of the leaked smartphone by Samsung soon after it was posted but Engadget managed to post a copy of the same video. Samsung's official reaction to the Galaxy S III video leak didn't deny anything, but said simply, "We will be able to tell you more at the 2012 Samsung Mobile Unpacked." That is like ...
